TEXAS STATE SOPHOMORE MUGGED

By Jeff Brown

A sophomore student was returning to her dorm through the Alkek garage when an unidentified assailant robbed her.

21-year-old Estella Garza was walking alone to San Jacinto Hall at 8:13pm Tuesday, after preparing for an upcoming exam, when the assault took place.

“I was just thinking about all the stuff I needed to do when I got back to my room and all of a sudden I saw this blur of motion and this guy on a bike just came out of nowhere. He grabbed my backpack and just sort of spun me around and took off. I went flying,” she said.

The suspect was described as tall and thin, approximately 19-25 years of age. At the time of the incident he was wearing a University of Texas shirt as well as a bandana over his face.

This is the fourth reported robbery of this type on campus since the start of this semester. The previous robberies have also occurred at night in secluded areas on campus. Police believe the same man is responsible for all of the robberies, and are taking steps to address the problem.

“We will have additional police officers patrolling campus in areas that may be vulnerable to this type of activity. We also urge members of the campus community to use caution when walking at night, particularly in secluded areas of campus. It is best to travel in groups and to remain alert,” said Ralph C. Meyer, University Police Chief, in a statement Wednesday morning.

Chief Meyer went on to remind students that the Bobcat Bobbies service is available for their safety, and any information regarding crime on campus should be reported to the UPD at 512-245-2890.
