Texas State Student Awakes From Coma

SAN MARCOS – A Texas State student was jogging in Canyon Lake when she lost her footing and sustained injuries leading to a three-day coma.
When 18-year-old Maggie Daniel decided to go for a run Friday, she never expected it would end with a brain injury.
“I have treated individuals who have fallen before, but I cannot recall seeing anyone as lucky as this young woman,” said Blaine Hollins, lead surgeon. “She came in with a broken arm, broken ribs, and many cuts and abrasions. However, it was her head injury that troubled us most.”
She was running along Canyon Lake cliffside trail when she lost her footing and fell 34-feet into the water below.
“I was so scared. All I remember is falling and waking up in a hospital,” said Daniel.
Fortunately for her, help was close by. Randy Davis, a 52-year-old boat mechanic and Canyon Lake resident, was out fishing when the accident took place.
“She hit the water hard. When I seen her fall, I immediately called 911. I tried to drive my boat over to her, but the water was extremely rough that day and those rocks don’t make it any easier. Luckily, EMS came and was able to get her out faster than I could,” said Davis.
Paramedics arrived on scene and immediately began to aid Daniel, but were uncertain she would survive.
“A 50-foot fall is fatal to most people,” said paramedic Tom Henderson, from New Braunfels. “She’s definitely a fighter…”
After arriving at the hospital, doctors put her into a medically induced coma in order to stimulate the healing process. She is now awake and expected to make a full recovery with no permanent damage.
